One of the many themes of Latino Literature is the quest for an individual to define his or her role in the community, while maintaining a separate identity. This means when a person is trying to find out what their role in the community is which is separate from the identity of their family. Two stories that have this theme are House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and "Lather and Nothing Else" by Hernando Te'llez. The main theme in House on Mango Street and "Lather and Nothing Else" is the quest for role in community, while maintaining a separate identity.
The House on Mango Street has many examples of the quest for role in community theme. For instance, "They always told us that one day we would into a house, a real h
ouse...and inside it would have real stairs, not hallway stairs, but stairs inside the houses on TV."(pg.4) In this story the main character shows the quest for the individual's identity within the community by showing a need to fit in with the people who have houses like the ones on TV. Another example is this,"If you give me five dollars I will be your friend forever...five dollars is cheap since I don't have any friends."(pg.14) The main character shows the quest for the role of being nice and having friends by paying Five Dollars to get a friend. One last example is when the main character said" I needed money for catholic school...because if I go to Public School I will turn out bad"(pg.53) The main character shows the quest for the role of being
