The craziness in Ordinary People is directly related to the depression of the many characters (Guest, Judith). Teenage depression is a rising occurrence in adolescents today. Many teenagers experiencing depression are never diagnosed and the problem continues through adulthood. Due to the emotional transition children go through their teenage years the signs and symptoms of depression are often overlooked. The characters, in Ordinary People, go through times of craziness as a result of depression in themselves. Depression is the state of being self degraded or humbled. Depressed teenagers are more likely to die from accidents as the depression increases. It is not uncommon for young people to think about the deaths other teenagers or close family. Suicide, “Offing oneself,” can be a direct result of depression. Suicide often happens in teens that are preoccupied in issues of mortality. Many of their stressors include divorce, physical, sexual or mental abuse, and drug and alcohol use. A drop in grades may signify loss of concentration and slower thinking.
