The Theme of Mirriam

In the short story "Mirriam", Truman Capote does an execellant job portraying Mrs. H.T. Miller's character by showing us the many changes she goes through in her personality, style of apartment, and how she acts under stress. He also foreshadows up coming events by the type of weather that takes place at a certain time.

When the story opens it portrays Mrs. Miller as a plain, prim, and self-suificent person. From her "matter-of-fact" clothes, to her "iron gray" hair that is clipped back and causally waved, she is a picture perfect model of a sixty-one year old woman. When Mrs. Miller decides to go out to the movies it says that she puts on her "beaver skin coat and golashes". This represents on how she tries to hide and protect herself from the outside world. This all changes when she meets Mirriam. When she makes her first appearance at Mrs. Miller's home she causes a ruccous by upsetting the canary and taking a brooch that poor Mrs. Miller's neat hair has slipped lopsided from the hair net and loose strands straggled down her face. Her pale cheeks have now been "molted in red patches, as though a fierce slap had left permanent marks". By the third appearance Mrs. Miller had began to cry very violently and ugly red lines ha

ing out of the cold and loneliness to the sunny and cheerful world of people. As soon as Mrs. Miller got done shopping and headed home the sky began to cloud again and the snow began to fall. Eventually the snow was coming down hard again. This is saying that once she left the human race to go home to her locked in self the snow begain to fall as if to iscolate her even more, just like the beaver coat did on her way to the movies.

when Miriam showed up at Mrs. Miller's home she came with a box. Mrs. Miller out of curiosity brought in the box and Miriam pushed her way in. In her home Miriam made the announcement that she was to move in with Mrs. Miller and stay there forever. When Mrs. Miller found out the new she started to cry. Her face turned red and tears streamed down her face. She had no choice but to run down to the neighbors across the hall. This was the climax of the story and the major turning point in Mrs. Miller's life; for once she realized that she needed to move on with her life and get back into civilaztion. She signified this by asking for help.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the story the weather plays an important part by foreshadowing up coming events. When the story starts out and Mrs. Miller decides to go to the movies the weather was snowing finely and falling gently. It was easy enough for her to get around because the snow wasn't deep and hadn't stuck to the ground. This represents the "clam before the storm", so to speak. The
