Times have certainly changed many things. Since the turn of this century, the trend of ignoring the moral voice has grown through popular culture and diminishing family values among a multitude of other social issues. Because people tend to dictate their lives based upon societies' values-- rather than their own guiding moral voice-- they are more cynical, distant, and primarily interested with themselves. Amitai Etzioni points out in his essay, "Morality as a Community Affair", that the community needs to exemplify and enforce a moral order of shared values. Similarly, in "Multiculturalism and Individualism", Michael Walzer emphasizes a need for individual responsibility attained and strengthened by community association through one another. The individualistic attitude of today's "gotta have it" society silences the inner moral voice inside of all of us. With a commonality of shared values, from a physiological perspective, people will be forced to listen to their own c!

Walzer contends, "Engaged men and women tend to be widely engaged-active in many different associations both locally and nationally. This is one of the most common findings of political scientists and sociologists"(536). With that having been said, consider the factors that disengage people from communal activities. Factors such as unemployment and weak community ties are the greatest of these factors. Individuals who lack personal responsibility need their communities most. Because people are free of communal responsibility, they will likely move towards isolationism, or even worse, individualism. And individualism is the biggest social pitfall for the self. Individualism leads to a self-centered, self-righteous attitude difficult to change without an inner moral voice that the community helps the individual to find. Community activism is a very healthy outlet, and it strengthens character. Embracing the community by getting involved in some way or another leads to a solid r!
