Television Violence And Our Children Television violence is a growing problem in our society and leads to aggression in people all over the world. Every year more and more situations occur where violence viewed on television programming leads to tragedy. In many cases these problems involve young children. Children as young as 2 or 3 years old have the intelligence to recognize violence that they view on their television sets and do not realize that what they are viewing is not a part of reality. Television networks only care about how high their ratings and violence in programming is a "necessity" to high ratings. As I have already stated, television violence leads to aggression. Exposure to television violence is an important factor in aggressive behavior in children (Barbara 1). Take cartoons for example. Children of all ages love to watch cartoons. In many cartoons, the main plot is for the "good guys" to destroy the "bad guys." Look at such cartoons as Batman, Power Rangers, and Xmen. In each of these cartoons, violence occurs in every single episode. Young children view these cartoons and see the violence in every single episode. Cartoons and other types of children's programming contains violence that children feel is a part of reality and therefore engage in violent acts in real life. The way in which television is portrayed leads to children feeling that television violence in enjoyable and entertaining. Parents need to let their children know that the violence they view on television is not a part of reality and attempt to hook their children on programs that are morally neutral.
