Over the past fifty years the television has been one of the most influential sources of information in the American culture. The TV has brought us news, movies, music, fashion, and art along with countless other things that has helped shape our culture. The words we speak and the cloths we wear are dictated by what we see on television. Growing up with the influence of MTV in my life I have seen many fashion trends start in videos and end up on every kid in high school. The early nineties were ruled by the Seattle "grunge" look that was made famous by the rock stars of the day. Today the hip-hop slang can be heard on any street in the United States. Words such as "bomb" and "fat" have taken on a completely different meaning. These trends are possible because so many kids watch MTV and want to emulate the musicians they see on television.
Television programs are scheduled around its viewers and they intern schedule around television. Examples of this can be found with all types of TV shows starting with Satu
rday morning cartoons. The network put cartoons on early Saturday morning because they know that young kids do not go to school on Saturdays. The kids in respond by watching the cartoons because they are up and it is too early to leave for their soccer game. This same type of thinking is used with the scheduling of prime time sitcoms. A company such as NBC knows to play its best situational sitcom on Thursday nights. Because Friday and Saturday people like to go out to dinner or to a movie, and early in the workweek people have too much on their minds to be able sit back and relax. So people all over America look forward to Thursday nights so they could watch Cheers or Seinfeld or now Frazier. For most people it is almost like the start of their weekend because after the show they have only one short day of!
