The death penalty has been one of the nation?s most controversial issues. Those who favor the death penalty should realize that by execution the criminal is not given anytime to reflect on their mistake. People should not be sentenced to die since the reasons for executing someone are not strong enough to absolutely persuade everyone.
Those who favor the death penalty believe that criminals who have committed murder deserve to die because they use up the precious taxpayers money. However there is no doubt that someone can do more alive than dead. By working, the criminal can pay back society and also their victim and the victim?s family. First of all, the offender should be required to compensate the victim?s family with the offender?s own income from employment or community service. There is no reason for the criminal to receive any compensation for his work, since money has no value
People in favor of capital punishment claim that by murdering the criminal they are finally bringing closure to the victim?s family. However, in the case of Johnny Paul Perry he was convicted of raping, murdering and mutilating a young woman. The thing that drove him to commit these grisly crimes is that Perry is mentally retarded and suffers from organic brain damage that resulted as a horrific abuse he suffered when he was 6 1/2 years old. The victim?s family said that experiencing Perry?s death actually brought more pain and suffering than the murder of their daughter.
