Cargo Security

Cargo security is a major problem that has affected our society over the years. According to industry analyst, estimated loses involving cargo theft have reach from $3.5 billion to $5 billion annually. Not only do these losses take a heavy toll on the victimized businesses, but also the problem keeps growing.

One example describing the amount of loses is analyzed in the magazine Security Management, where it is shown that The National Cargo Security Council, a nonprofit organization base in Alexandra, Virginia, estimated that $10 billion is lost each year in cargo theft related problems. Another example also described in the mentioned magazine shows that The Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team, a California program consisting of several law enforcement agencies reported that $20.3 million was lost during the first quarter of 1995 alone. Both of these are problems that private industries and law enforcement agencies can consider common.

It is believed that there is a solution to every problem. Measures can also be taken to provide a possible solution to the problems facing cargo security, preferably a security plan where security policies and procedures are put into practice. It is known that at first only private security directors

, from the different transportation companies, participated in the problem that has plagued the transportation industry fro years. Lately, law enforcement authorities were invited. Together they began hashing out potential solutions to this growing problem.

Although, because of their heavy workload, law enforcement officials cannot possibly be aware of all the niceties of the cargo industry, there are many ways for cargo company representatives to get information to local law enforcement, "One national cargo company holds a gathering once a year at its different terminals around the country. It invites local law enforcement to socialize and learn about the company's cargo policies. Another company sends out information bulletins to police whenever major changes occur, such as a switch in cargo. One such memo informed police that the company was now hauling television sets instead of batteries, thus creating a more attractive target for thieves" (Macko, 1996).

Another security practice, as described in the book "Introduction to Security, Six Edition," to lessen theft in the cargo security field would be the practice of a security plan where there would be a control of all vehicles entering and leaving
