The Silence of the Lambs

In the first five minutes in the move, The Silence of the Lambs the director shows Clarice Starling running through an FBI training course that is in the forest. The opening scene takes place in a forest, thick with trees. The fog makes for a late-summer or early-fall early morning. This and other training courses and lessons were to teach the future FBI agents how to cope with the assignments they would later have to follow. At this point in the movie Clarice had no idea of the trail she would soon follow to hunt down one of the most wanted killers, Buffalo Bill. Within these first five minutes of the film, the director indicates that it will be a detective story and thriller.

The close up of her face and feet during her run through the obstacles on this course, portray Clarice as alone and determined to finish. She also looks a little scared and frightened of the unknown, of what might be hidden behind the trees. Clarice is running very fast, almost trying to run to or from something. At the end of the movie Clarice achieves success, but seems to have no insight about herself. The investigating of her inner feelings and memories that Lector has for

A man dressed in an FBI uniform catches up to her when she is jumping obstacles to let her know that she is to report to her superior immediately. Just as Lector catches her and helps her save the unsolvable case she has been assigned to. Clarice seems to draw strength from her relationship with the perverted psychiatrist. Dealing with the details of a deviate serial killer present many unexpected obstacles.

ced her to do has no payoff. Lector analyzes Clarice in their first meeting. He calls her ambitious and petty, one generation removed from white trash. Daughter of a slain, small-town cop, Clarice is indeed out to prove her worth and rise above her roots. But as the model FBI trainee, she has taken the "good girl" route. She is superficial, with no sense of the limitations in herself or the "lawful" way of life.

Once inside the office building there are mostly men, clean, and in uniform. Clarice looks very out of place. Clarice is a detective woman in danger who is determined to prove herself in the ultimate male world of the FBI. The structure of the movie expresses both the successes and failures of a woman's liberation in a deadly world.
