Rape

A detailed Summary of Rape

What is rape? Rape is a criminal violation of abusive and/or improper behavior that forces another person to submit to sexual acts, ranging from oral sex to sexual intercourse (Dictionary.com). The topic of rape has broadened, and extensive research has been done to tackle the issue, due to an explosive number of people standing up and admitting to their grievances. Anyone can be a victim of rape; it does not discriminate against age, race, ethnicity, or gender-so males are not excluded. Although people are beginning to initiate help in solving the rape crisis by speaking out, there is still a considerable sum that cannot be helped because fear of speaking up.

There is a positive correlation between rapes, and college campuses in both rural and urban areas; "85% of the time, her attacker is someone she knows-a parent, a relative, a boyfriend" (Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape). "The mix of drugs and alcohol are significant factors of date rape," says an anonymous source, "sometimes, if people are really retarded, it isn't uncommon for them to make irresponsible decisions that they might regret, but that still does not give anyone a right to rape." Drinking has become a popular social activity amongst college studen

jured females" (Donaldson) 80 to 100 percent of the perpetrators of both male-to-male, and male-to-female rapes, are said to have either been raped or victimized in their life, which supports the cycle of abuse and assault. The stigma of the abuse or assault is that if you have been a victim, then you are more likely to be the predecessor in a similar situation. The dehumanization of rape is overpowering, and is disorientating to heterosexual males, by forcing them to deal with the "loss of manhood", and the devastation. I think that it is very difficult for anyone to understand the complexity of any rape victim's emotions (whether they are male or female) if the person has not shared a similar experience. "Heterosexual male survivors typically show enormous anxiety and confusion regarding issues of masculine identity and homosexuality. The survivor's sexuality may show severe distortions and malfunctions. Serious depression is likely and suicide may result" (Donaldson)

Brownmiller argues, "Man's discovery that his genitalia could serve as a weapon to generate fear must rank as one of the most important discoveries of prehistoric times, along with the use of fire and the first crude stone axe. From prehistoric times to the present, I believe, rape has played a critical function...it is nothing more or less than a conscious process of intimidation by which all men keep all women in a state of fear" (Brownmiller). Her feminist sentiment is clearly stating that all men are inherently rapists, with no possible way of avoiding it. By Browmiller dipping into history at her discretion, and selecting historic accounts that only support her statement that all men are rapists, shows that her argument does not "hold water."

"Although there are usually three key elements involved, socialization, miscommunication, and/or changing sexual mores, one major reason for date rape is a lack of consideration for a woman's rights and wishes."(Hughes) Reading further, the article continues by blaming rape on men instinctually being more aggressive than women. "Men are taught at a very early age to be aggressors; they participate in aggressive team sports, are encouraged to be competitive, not to give up, to keep on trying." (Hughes) Personally, I do not think that it is fair to say that men are going to rape because they are the aggressors; it is
