Good Mothers

Claudine Hampton, Amanda Wingfield, and Kate Keller, though they may not make the best decisions regarding their children, are all good mothers who love and care for their children unconditionally. In the selections "Lu Ann Hampton Laverty Oberlander," "The Glass Menagerie," and "The Miracle Worker," all of these women are faced with certain obstacles regarding the well-being their children, and, although they do not make the best decisions, they do try their best to take care of their children and raise them to the best of their abilities.

Claudine Hampton in "Lu Ann Hampton Laverty Oberlander" is a widowed nurse who is known to be honest and worried for her children, Lu Ann and Skip. She loves her children and wants them to prepare for their future while,


at the same time, they enjoy their high school years. Although her vision of a bright future is somewhat distorted, Claudine does want the best for her children, and she means well in all that she does. She works nights to provide them with food and shelter and take care of them the best way she knows how.

Kate Keller in "The Miracle Worker" is another woman who loves her daughter dearly but makes bad decisions regarding her well-being. Helen, Kate's daughter, is diagnosed with deafness and blindness as an infant, and Kate, loves her the same. Kate's love for Helen is revealed by her unwillingness for Anne to discipline her. She wants what is best for Helen, but her love for her daughter prevents her from seeing what is actually in her best interest. In
