George Washington Carver
George Washington Carver was born into slavery at the end of the Civil War, near Diamond Grove Missouri. His mother was owned by Moses Carver and his paternity is unknown. It is believed that his father was a slave on a neighboring farm who was killed in a log-hauling accident shortly after George was born. Moses Carver was a prosperour slave owning Unionist and was the target of Confederate bushwhacking on three different occasions. Near the end of the Civil War a group of these road onto Carver’s land in search of money. George’s brother Jim was able to hide, but young George and his mother Mary were kidnapped and taken to Arkansas. George was relocated in 1865 and was returned to Moses Carver, but Mary was never found. Moses Carver and his wife Susan raised both George and Jim as if they were their own. This was very unconventional due to their basic opposition to slavery and their support for the Uniion. Jim was stronger and helped Moses with the outdoor work, while Jim was sickly and frail. He helped Susan indoors. She taught him how to cook, bake, sew, and do other household chores, as well as how to read. He soon developed a love for drawing as well as an interest in nature and anim
