Considered a key figure in the “liberalization and subsequent disintegration of Soviet and Eastern European Communism” , Mikhail Gorbachev had definitely a substantial impact on the status of the USSR and Europe during his time as the last leader of the USSR. However, it would seem that much of his contributions are accidental rather than planned actions. The fact that he was trying to actually renew the vigor of the Soviet Union when he destroyed it is seemingly of only a coincidental factor. His policies were intended to help the Soviet Union, and in increasing consternation, he had seen it hinder the USSR until the point of breakup.

It is definitely Gorbachev’s policies, both foreign and ones that enacted in the USSR which were the major actions taken by him, and therefore was his major impact on Europe and the Soviet Union. In the Soviet Union, where the majority of his efforts lay, he exercised his power in various forms. One of his major concerns was political reform.
