And each day when they leave their homes, their family members pray that they will return safely home. But, what happens to these families when one day they do not return home safely? Who is there to help them cope with the great loss they have just experienced. When a police officer is killed the death does not only effect the family but it also effects the society as well as the police office partner. Having a support group such as The New York Shields and others makes coping with the painful death of a loved one. With out support groups such as this the healing time would be a lot long. Having somewhere to turn in a time of need it a very import thing to have because without it, it is a difficult thing to go through on your own. Also having the benefit that the United States also provides also takes away some of the stress the a spouse may take on.
In the state of New York there is a non-profit fraternal organization that is composed of law enforcement personnel of all ranks from all over the state called the New York Shields. The Shields was founded in 1990 to build a strong support system for those slain officers and to honor their selfless acts of heroism.
