Sherman ALexies way of expression
In Sherman Alexie's novel, Reservation Blues he uses many of the same characters from other books and poems he's written. They seem to all face the same problem of trying to live in a white mans society facing alcoholism, abuse, and, or drugs. He uses dark humor in unexpected areas, making it seem as if he is discriminating against Native Americans or White's. Although he show's the importance of ones inner spirit, Sherman Alexies life reflects on much of the way he writes and he gives the impression that he is putting himself in the book as one of the characters of Reservation Blues. He also uses a writing style he calls "fancy dancing" this is how he shows the humor behind the problems. This is appears as if he is discriminating and putting down the Native Americans. Although Alexie gives the impression that he is putting down the Native Americans in his book or his use of dark humor, he has a message in almost every thing he writes. Abigail Adams shows her opinion on Alexies novel Reservation Blues recognizing the familiar characters and Alexies fancy dancing with humor and anger shown by his intelligence. Using fancy dancing he shows humor in the problems with alcohol, drug and other forms of abuse. In the novel Re
Although Alexie seems to put down the Native Americans in his book or use dark humor he has a message in almost everything he writes. He knows what to write about and when to write them. "His direct honesty prevails and we are required to think and listen and think again even as we smile and laugh."3 Alexie writes honestly while creating his characters he never beats around the bush he seems to state exactly what is happening so bluntly to the point were you are just awed in amazement to think something like that would be written. Such as the problems that go on in every day lives althou! servation Blues the main characters are Junior, Victor and Thomas, these are the same characters with the same problems, they are used in other pieces of Alexies work such as The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Leslie Ullman in the Kanyon Review writes, "Alexies Collection...weaves a curiously soft blended tapestry of humor, humility, pride, and metaphysical provocation out of the hard realities that make up its material: The Tin Shack Lives, The Alcohol Dreams, The Bad Luck, Burlespue Disasters, and Self Destructive Courage of his characters,"1 Alexie does not only use this in his poems, but in his book's as well. He always mentioned alcohol in at least every chapter of the book;! Either using strong powerful and meaningful words or simply using dark humor in unexpected areas, Sherman Alexie knows how and whe
