Congreve's play, The Way of the World, while it was very interesting it still remained very hard to follow. However, as the plot unfolded and the relationships became more evident, the story line was more readily understood. The play gave an almost comical portrayal of women and even the morals for which they lived by. The attitudes toward the women would have a feminist of today irate. The behavior of the women, while being humorous, was very unbecoming of a woman in those times.

Over the years attitudes toward women have changed and even evolved into what they are today. The attitudes portrayed in the play towards the women are not a very good representation of the true attitudes for the time period that the play takes place. It almost seems that the author, William Congreve, has taken a true representation of today's society's attitude towards women. Take for instance the scene with Fainall and Mirabell. These gentlemen are sitting a round play cards and speaking of women. To me, in a true representation of the time period the men would not be si

tting around talking about the women. This sounds like a modern day event. Never the less, an example of men's attitude towards women is shown in this scene. One could also say that men saw women as sexual objects. They have no respect for their significant other. Take for instance Mr. Fainall. He goes off with Mrs. Marwood. The women's behavior is something to talk about. It is as if they have no morals what so ever. Every woman seems to be undermining her friends. Mrs. Marwood is very manipulative as it pertains to her actions with Mrs. Fainall. They both have a strong hatred towards men in general. Marwood convinces Mrs. Fainall to divorce her husband. All the time that this is going on Mrs. Marwood is trying to be with Mr. Fainall. She is convincing Mrs. Fainall to leave her husband so that Mrs. Marwood can get with him. This simple act of deception shows the moral values that Mrs. Marwoo
