Christopher Columbus
Out of all the many great explorers most people think of Christopher Columbus as the greatest. They think of him as the greatest because he was the first explorer to reach the Americas. He was one of the few early believers that the world was round. Throughout Columbus's great life as an explorer he went on four great voyages and made many great discoveries. Columbus had a great life and many interesting things happened to him in his lifetime. Columbus# forever changed the world by his many discoveries and it is amazing how many discoveries he managed to go back to the same location every time even though he had no idea where he really was and he made many navigational errors. Columbus was born in Genoa Italy in 1451. Genoa had a busy port and many ships went in and out of its port everyday#. His father was a weaver and it is believed that he started to become a weaver when he was young. He had very little education and learned to read and write as an adult. He went to sea just like the other Genoese boys did and voyaged in the Mediterranean. When he was 25 years old he went with a convoy bound for England, the ship sunk, but Columbus swam to shore and took refuge in Lisbon. He settled there and later marr
Columbus left and reached Spain in June of 1496.# He didn't find his quick route to the rich Asian Mainland and he had been only somewhat successful at getting gold from the Indians. The Spanish settlers were unruly and would not work. Some settlers returned to Spain with complaints about Columbus. Funded by Ferdinand and Isabella Columbus set sail from Cadiz on his 2nd voyage. He left on September 26, 1493 and had 17 ships and almost 1,500 men#. First they stopped in the Canary Islands and then made landfall on November 3, 1493 near Dominica#. The explorers went past Puerto Rico and reached the sited of Navadid, a settlement that Columbus started on, on November 27-28, 1493#. The settlement had been destroyed, and the Indians had killed all the Spaniards who had seized gold and the women. Columbus started a new settlement named Isabella about 70 miles to the east of the Navadid's site. He left in April 1494 and explored Cuba but never proved it to be an island#. He returned to Isabella after 5 months. Columbus tried to govern the colony until he returned to Spain in 1496, but he was not a good governor#. He left his brother Bartolome in charge with instructions to move the settlement to the south coast of Hispaniola. # After Vasco de Gamma of Portugal set sail in 1497 to India, Columbus was authorized to make a 3rd voyage.# It was hard for Columbus to recruit a crew but he finally set sail in May of 1498 with 6 ships.# He made landfall on Trinidad on July 31, 1498#.
