"Aztec justice was swift and generally inforgiveing, for crimes were dangerous to a balanced world." (Boone, 117)

The people that wandered from the morally right ways were cast out of the Aztec Society. They would (or could) be physically shuned from their "altepetl" and would be forced into the wilderness with nothing. And no other "altepetl" would take them in. Murders were killed unless the victim's family decides to place them in bondaged. Thieves had to repay what they stole but not in money but by becoming slaves to the victims they stole from. Repeated offenders were killed. If the victims did not want the offenders near them they would just sell the criminals to other people in the surrounding community. Adulterers if caught, were taken into the marketplace and stoned to death. If anyone in the crminal court such as judges and tax collectors were dishonest, they would be executed. If a young commoner became drunk, if caught he was beaten with wooden stroves. But if he was the child of a nobleman, thenhe would be strangled.

"Sumpturary" laws were set down by "moctezuma the elder," which regulated a dress code for nob


les and commoners. The reason for this was that one would easily recognized each person's position in the surrounding community. It was almost impossible to dress above or below one's standing. The "sumptuary" laws were written down in "Duran's chronicle" and had specification to the types of fabric and designs, and the length of the men's cloak that was allowed.

Nobles were called pipiltins and these people considered themselves decendants of the first Mexica Monarch. Both nobles and commoners had to follow a strict dress code. No one whether they were noble or not, could not dress above his or her station. People of noble blood dressed in elaborate, decorated cloaks. All of the nobles' cloths were made of fine weavings and designed with feather and hair ornonments. They wore jewerly which consisted of gold, silver, and precious stones, this is what made them stand out above others. The cloaks were made of fine cotton and they wore sandles, all which were elaboratley manufactured.

The nobles [pipiltin] had certain rights and privalages. They owned their own land where commoners worked on. The commoners support the nobles by working for them on their land and by growing their food, in which the nobles would eat.
