This past presidential election was one the most historic events that our young country has ever seen. There have been disputed elections before but none have been brought to the State Supreme Courts or the Federal Supreme Courts. So much controversy surrounding an election really was unheard of before this past year. Therefore, as one might expect, a plethora of information about the election and the events that transcribed is available. The only problem is trying to sort out the most important happenings. The first event that I have found worthy of inclusion in the ten most important of the past election cycle was the Republican National Convention held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the first chance that we got to see of how well George W. Bush could be of a leader. The next event that helped shape the election was Vice-President Gore's choice of Sen. Joe Lieberman as his running mate. The fact that Sen. Lieberman was a Jew played a key role in the w!

idual. Because of the amount of times Bush was made fun of it influenced my opinion. I am not saying that I believe everything in the media, but what I am saying is that it was very easy to get tangled up in the media's barraging of stories, most of which are not even newsworthy. The courts played the most important role of the election. They indirectly choose our president. By the Supreme Court's ruling to reserve the Florida verdict the election was brought to a conclusion. The political parties fought and protested the courts decisions time after time. For a BI-partisan president George W. Bush is going to have his hands full after an election like this, which divided the two parties right down the middle. I do not agree with the results of this election, mainly because so many votes went uncounted. If not making these bureaucrat's deadlines means all votes are to be counted then so be it, the country can wait a few more days. I feel that if one goes t!

The Democrats filed a motion in Florida State court asking for Broward County to be ordered to conduct a manual hand recount of all their presidential ballots. The hope is that a human eye might be able to turn more votes toward Gore. The motion stated that the county's decision to not recount the votes by hand was based on the erroneous account of the Florida Secretary of State, Katherine Harris. Harris said that the manual recounts could only be allowed if the county officials found a problem with the computer. The Republicans sent two separate appeals to the State capital of Tallahassee and another challenge went to a Federal appeals court in Atlanta, Georgia. The Republicans claimed that the hand recounts are unconstitutional because it meant that some voters were being treated differently depending on where they live.

After both the Republican and Democratic conventions had concluded and a month went by the public began to become more divided and the race became a great deal more intense. By the middle of the month of September all of the polls throughout the country showed that George W. Bush's lead had dwindled to near nothingness from the double-digit leads that he had enjoyed for months previously. After the polls came out the Bush camp started to sing a different slogan, Real Plans for Real People, insinuating that Gore was not able to be in touch with the common voter, but that Bush was in affect your average guy with solutions. The change in the weather helped to bring the Bush campaign back to reality, "Everyone thought we were so good that we were gonna walk away with this thing. Even we started to believe it," coming from a top Bush advisor. With the race tightened more people started to pay attention to what the candidates were saying, making the upcoming debates muc!

Bush Declares Presidency, December 13:

act that Lieberman is a devoutly Jewish man plays as a strength against the well-known conservative Republican views on family values and religious dedication.

The Florida Supreme Court Ordered a Full Manual Recount, December 9:
