The year is 1984. The world is divided to three main countries at war: Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. An ever-watching party, lead by The Big Brother, controls Oceania- in the most absolute way the word "controls" can define. The party performs like an oiled-powerful machine, which leaves its workers no chance to escape. The party, using governmental authorities, such as the "Ministry of Plenty"(in charge of keeping low supplies of food and daily products to the citizens during the war), "The Ministry of Love" and "Thought police", which dominate its citizens completely. Not only do the 2 latter authorities prevent the citizens from rebelling in the government, but also they avert them from thinking of that. One who's been caught committing the crimes above, automatically "disappears"
Winston Smith, the main character, is one of the "Ministry of truth" workers. Each day he falcificates the facts of the past, under the watch of the "Telescreens"- a kind of a Television, that follows the citizens 24 hours a day and is the most efficient tool to enforce the authority of the government. In contrast to the absolute docility of the brainwashed citizens, Winston is aware to the horror in which he lives, and opposes the terrorizing party. Yet, he has major difficulties finding a partner to his rebellious considerations, as a result of the great fear of being caught, which seems to paralyze the society around him.
