Eusebius of Caesarea
Eusebius of Caesarea is considered by many authorities to be the first church historian . His life would span from 265 --330 AD. Some claim that this is an estimated date, based on research, statements in others writings of the time, and on those timeline indicators present in his writings. Based on his writings, it is a calculated guess that he was born in the 260's. There is virtually no documentation on Eusebius, until his rise to importance under Constantine, and his own biographical writings. Eusebius birthplace is not documented, nor his parentage. Based on his own writings, he spent his youth in Caesarea, a city in Palestine. References to Eusebius in others works of that time state that his mother was the sister of Pamphilus. This does not make the claim that he was Palestinian. Nor did he refute these assertions. However, he was called "Eusebius the Palestinian by Marcellus (Euseb. Lib. Adv. Marcell. I. 4) and Bash (Lib. ad. Amphil. de Spir. Sancto.c.29)" . T!his could further substantiate his taking of the name Eusebius Pamphili. Others have stated that he took this name from a mentor, Pamphilus of Ca
esarea. He spoke Syriac, Greek, but not Latin, which could be construed that he was born in the region of Syria. His best is the Church History, consisting of 10 books, written around 323-324 AD. The tenth book reads like a postscript to the first nine books. The reasoning behind such an undertaking is found in his writing, with no dedication of the books and no references to prompting by others to do so. He lived during a time when the church was going through tremendous changes, and with his scientific and apologetic mind wanted to capture it on paper. He developed a cross-reference to the Gospels, divided the Gospel of Matthew into 355 parts along with others, and constructed tables/lists to handle those sections that were redundant in several Gospels. He chronicled the history of the Christian church till 324 AD and the history of his world till 303 AD. He died around 339 AD, following Constantine, and before the death of Constantine's son. However, could he have been made Bishop of Caesarea, and sustained such a reputation if these accusations could have been substantiated. Eusebius held the position of bishop till his death.
