standing in her shadow
She walked through the hallways of school,self-concious of her appearance as always. She thought she could feel the kids staring at her, laughing inside. Brigid was a beautiful 15 year old girl, 5'8", brown hair, brown eyes. Only one thing was wrong, the only thing that made her uneasy the most, her weight. She wasn't fat but she wasn't as "skinny" as she thought she should be. Brigid would constantly compare herself to other girls at school, in the mall, and everywhere else she went. Her friends would repeatedly tell her how pretty she was and that she looked fine the way she was, but she could never convience herself of what they were saying. Although the occasional remarks from her mother like "that shirt makes you look fat" and "do you realy want to go out looking like that?" didn't help much either. Brigid sat down in her last period math class and waited for the teacher to come in. Other kids in the class were making there way into class slowly Her mind seemed to wander and she found herself thinking about him, Jared. He was the perfect guy, tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, kind of built, but not to much muscle. Wouldn't it be great to go out with him she thought, but she knew she didn't stand a chance with someone l
Brigid sat in her room sulking until the phone rang, she picked it up, "Hello?" sshe said wondering who it could be. It was Juliet "Hi, I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorryif i upset you, and I wanted to tell you that I am going out with Jared." "Why did you even bother to call if you weren't going to aplogize, I don't want to talk to you." She hung up the phone and vowed not to talk to Juliet in school the next day or any other day until she realized what a big mistake she had made and that it wasn't worth losing a friend over a guy. Juliet had been her best friend since kindergarden, yet she hated her. she was one of those girls who woke up in the moring and could walk out of the house looking perfect. She was tall and thin, with straight blonde hair and the biggestsky blue eyes Brigid had ever seen. Brigid often wondered why someone like Juliet would be friends with someone like her, and she often asked her why. Juliet would just smile and say "Who wouldn't want to be friends with you?" They just caught the busand made there way to the back seat where they always sat. Usually Brigid was a chatter box on the way home, telling Juliet all the things that had happened to her that day, but today she just stared blankly out the window thinking of nothing but Jared. She wouldn't even tell Juliet about her new crush for fear that she would laugh, that she would even think about going out with someone as "perfect" as he was. Class was over and she sat as far away from juliet on the bus as possible, she walked home without her and refused totake any of her phone calls. It was around 1:15 am when the phone rang, and for some reason Brigid felt she should answer it. When she picked up the phone she heard a woman crying, she was hysterical, it was Juliet's mom. She told Brigid that Juliet and Jared had got into a car accident, they had crashed into a telephone poll on the way home from the movies. Brigid didn't even have the courage to ask weither they were alive or not, but she had to know"Are they alright?" she held her breath, dreading the answer. "Jared is in the hospital in critical condition, but Juliet didn't, she didn't, she didn't make it, the impact of the crash killed her instantly. Why me?" she asked out loud not expecting answer from anyone. "Why does my life have to always be s unfair?" She spent the rest of the night crying on and off and thinking about what she was going to say to Juliet, or if she was going to say anything at all. She and Juliet lived next door to each other, so they got off the bus and walked home together. She said goodbye abd continued to walk a few more feet to her house. Her mother was home, but as always Brigid gave a solemn nod of the head and continued off to her room. Ever since Brigid could remember she fought with her mom, she didn't know why, they just could never seem to get along. Her dad had left when she was five, maybe thatwas partically to blame. The only
