Throughout the duration of the play Hamlet, by Shakespeare the main character portrays many different personalities or faces in an effort to hide his true feelings. The reader finds him to be very selective in whom he confides in. At times, Hamlet felt so strongly that he would not confide certain feelings with the woman whom he loved. When Hamlet felt a sense of safety and sanctuary he was straightforward with those he was speaking with. He would be so apt to speak the truth with characters like Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Horatio, Marcellus and Ophelia respectively. Only speaking respectively so with Ophelia because he knew that she was helping the King to spy on him. The reader may be unaware of it at the time but Hamlet struggles with deep inner conflicts throughout the play.

When Hamlet is in the company of friends he is more relaxed and more open. When Hamlet is with his friends Horatio, Marcellus and Bernardo he says: "The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables"(p.41). Throughout the duration of the epic tragedy Hamlet, by Shakespeare the reader is able to see how Hamlet covers up his true feelings in many situations. Hamlet chooses who he is true with and who he is not instinctively. When Hamlet sensed that Ophelia was spying he choose not to be straightforward to her. Also, Hamlet had people that he desired to be honest with. These people were who he felt comfortable around. All through the play Hamlet conceals his true emotion with those who he feels unworthy of being able to understand Hamlet.

A discouraging reaction like the one seen by the King posses a fairly large problem for Hamlet. After his father dies not only does he no longer have a father figure in his life that respects him as a man, but what he does have lacks the intelligence to recognize that Hamlet may be in pain due to his loss. It is perceived that the king does not know how much emotional effect he may have on Hamlet.

The reader has now seen several instances in which Hamlet has been reluctant yet eventually ends up revealing himself. There are also many people that Hamlet does not have the least bit of confidence in such as: the King and the Queen, his mother.

The reader notices different reactions to Hamlets dishonesty from different people. Instead of acknowledging his feelings as his friends had Hamlet's mother and father are quick to brush these types of expressions off. This disregard of feeling may serve as the root of Hamlets having to defend himself. The reader finds this reaction from the king when Hamlet still mourns the death of his father:

As it is clearly shown the king is everything but accepting toward outside points of view. He is very concave in his perception. He may have a more callous effect on Hamlet that he realizes. This reaction he shows here roughly translated today would be something of: Your father died, so what, you're a man, now get over it.

In the beginning of the play Hamlet appears to be confrontational in the way he covers his true emotions. However, it is evident that these feelings of quarrel are not honest. Hamlet says: "Seems, madam? Nay, it is. I know not 'seems' 'tis not alone my inky cloak, good mother..."(Shakespeare p.37). Hamlet says this in an attempt to hide his true feelings of empathy for the loss of his father. Also, it appears as though Hamlet does not really want to fight with his mother. He merely uses this fight as a facade to try to express how unhappy he is about his mothers' untimely marriage. He feels too vulnerable to express his true feelings to his mother for he is unsure if she would disown him or if she even mourns the death of the king at all.
