Direct democracy
Should Canadians have a direct democracy? Are the Canadian people capable of making decisions for themselves or should they elect people that can make the decisions for them? We here in Canada claim to be a nation of democracy, but in truth we are not. Democracy is defined by Websters dictionary as "government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them, or elected agents under a free electoral system"a. The people of Canada certainly do not exercise this "supreme power" themselves, and the elected officials supposedly representing them answer only to their party leaders, and they in turn to the supporters of their party, "big business". So then why don't we live in a true democracy? It comes to the question of: are Canadians competent enough to govern themselves? Many people feel that they cannot, and that more educated and intelligent people should govern over them, making their decisions for !them. Ironically some of the people saying this are the ones that presently run the country! What is a direct democracy then? It is defined as the right of citizens to hold referendums on any issues they feel are in dispute, and to veto legislation. In

The progressive leaders claim that the people are intelligent and discerning enough to govern themselves, and voting on the issues they say will enhance their civic education. Also, if the vote! ask his party members to vote for something his own riding may not want. If he does not vote as his party does, he will be kicked out of the party, and he becomes an independent. 3. The majorities will forced on them on every issue. People in most cases would vote for their own interests, and unless they were with the majority they would not have their interests met. Money and the media would play a major role in influencing peoples votes. This would make those who control media outlets even more powerful than they are in the current system. Without some kind of government operated, un-biased news station the people would only see the issues only as other people want them to see it. Wealthy corporations would the the advantage of TV And internet ads that could give a biased opinion on an issue the corporation would benefit from. The cost of having a nation wide referendum on every debated issue would be astronomical, and money would have to be cut from other programs OR taxes would have to be raised.
