Direct democracy

Should Canadians have a direct democracy? Are the Canadian people capable of making decisions for themselves or should they elect people that can make the decisions for them? We here in Canada claim to be a nation of democracy, but in truth we are not. Democracy is defined by Websters dictionary as "government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them, or elected agents under a free electoral system"a. The people of Canada certainly do not exercise this "supreme power" themselves, and the elected officials supposedly representing them answer only to their party leaders, and they in turn to the supporters of their party, "big business". So then why don't we live in a true democracy? It comes to the question of: are Canadians competent enough to govern themselves? Many people feel that they cannot, and that more educated and intelligent people should govern over them, making their decisions for !
