After dinner, we start to see all the guests filling out, saying their "good-byes" and "thank-you's", but as this is going on, there is a scene up stairs involving Bartell D'Archy and one of the female guests. In this scene, they are talking about birds and how beautiful they sing, which also captures a love interest between these two characters. His statement in this scene with regards to"...being a singer, I find myself partial to creatures that sing." Also brings in the connection of love with the music. Just as this connection was clear with Aunt Kate and Parkinson, we will see that love holds strong with music during the climatic buildup of this film. We see that as Gabriel is getting ready to leave the party downstairs, the voice of Bartell D'Archy breaks into the scene. He is singing the song, "The Lass of Aughrim". This song meant a great deal to James Joyce, and we see why it's the focal point of the connection between the past secret of Gretta's and the p!

te. As she talks about his "sweet Tenor voice" it is quite obvious that she might have been in love with the young Tenor. This love obviously wasn't in reference to his voice, but of course, to the man himself. And as we are shown Aunt Kate's expression of "lost love", the camera quickly takes a shot at Gretta, who too also shows expression of remembrance, as if to say that Kate Morkan's story holds something in connection with Gretta's own past. Once again, we see that this is now the second connection made to a secret story that is being hidden to the audience about Gretta's past. Also, in both instances, once it has been made clear that Gretta is hiding something inside, the scenes quickly move up pace and shift to another part of the story. But eventually after dinner, the true past of Gretta is revealed through a Tenor's voice, and a "lost" song.

Also, we are able to see that there is another form of unspoken tension between Gretta and Gabriel when he talks to her about Molly going to the west of Ireland. Immediately we sense that the west means something special to Gretta, but that Gabriel obviously is not interested in going at all. This really allows us to see that their marriage is not completely secure, as far as happiness is concerned. As we move on there is the scene where the eldest Morkan Sister, Julia sings "Arrayed for the Bridal". This musical segment takes in the idea of the link between past and present as the camera works its way through the rest of the house. We se it moving over pictures of deceased loved ones, and old doll houses, which fits in perfectly with the idea behind Julia singing this song that relates her character back to the days when she was a young singer.
