Pros and Cons of Bilingual Education

People in today's society have opposite opinions on how to approach the issue of bilingual education. Basically, the sides are split on the issue of teaching bilingual education in United States schools. There are many excellent points and arguments for each side of the tape. Personally, I chose to believe that we should keep bilingual education out of the United States because of the high cost to taxpayers. This process of teaching foreigners, most of them illegal immigrants, our language takes a long period of time and consumes a large amount of taxpayer money.

education in Denver schools. Of 18 million dollars spent on bilingual programs in Colorado, eight million dollars of that is strictly spent on illegal immigrants. This to me is utterly disturbing. To think of taxpayer money financing us to teach illegal immigrants how to speak English. Even though all of this money is poured into these programs, over 80 percent of students failed to show significant improvements in the English language after two years of bilingual education. Studies showed that the longer these students are taught in segregated classes, where English is not primarily used, performance is worse (Richman 1). These arguments and studies establish why bilingual education should be out.
