Father of the Techno-Thriller

Michael Crichton is a well-educated best-selling author. All together he went to Harvard for eight years. He has taught himself a great deal of knowledge just by traveling to exotic places, doing research for a book, or by simply getting into a hobby or interest. He has written books, directed films, owned his own software company, won many awards, and traveled to most of the world. In short, Michael Crichton has led a fuller, different, and more knowledgeable life than most people.

Michael Crichton was born in Chicago, IL in 1942. Michael played basketball for Roslyn High School and at 6' 7" in the tenth grade he was considered a giant. He was one of four children in a family that did a lot of traveling. When he had graduated from high school, he had already been to forty-eight states, Canada, Mexico, and five European countries; and by the time he started Med-School, he had been to all of Europe, North Africa, and North America. He is considered by himself to be an accomplished traveler.

For his career, Michael was convinced that he would become a writer. He proceeded to attend Harvard, majoring in English. The courses proved to be difficult, especially in English, in which he had b

arely maintained a C. The teachers were very analytical of his writings and were not very encouraging towards his choice of a career. This proved to be very disconcerting to him and he decided to test the English department. In a bold move, Crichton plagiarized a George Orwell essay and retyped it as his own. If he got caught, he faced expulsion from Harvard. However, he reworded the paper well enough that his teachers did not notice the similarities between his report and the George Orwell essay. Although Michael Crichton escaped from the whole ordeal unscathed, albeit with a B-, he became convinced that the English Classes at Harvard were far too difficult for him and he changed his major to anthropology. He went on to finish his years at Harvard with a major in anthropol!

Michael Crichton has moved on in recent years to produce an Emmy winning TV show, ER, and has had several movies made from his books. In all eighteen of his books have been made into movies, including Jurassic Park, The Lost World and The Great Train Robbery. His television series ER was put on the air in 1994 and is still on today. It has won eight Emmys. He has three awards for his written works. He has invariably earned the nickname "father of the tecno-thriller", partly because he does meticulous research and gets all the details right in his technologically infused fiction novels. He even has a species of ankylosaurus named for him, Bienosaurus crichtoni. Back in the early 1980s Michael owned a software company and produced the game Amazon. EIDOS has produced Timeline, a game based on his latest novel.

Overall Michael Crichton has had a very successful life. He has set himself very high goals and he achieved them through hard work and dedication...and just a little imagination. All his hard work has led him through a life full of experiences that are as wide ranging as the ocean is wide.

After a year of traveling abroad, Michael decided to return to Harvard to get a degree in medicine. At first there was a problem as to how he was going to pay for the expensive medical school because his other three siblings were also in college at that time and his parents could not afford his tuition at that time. He decided to give writing another shot. He was particularly fond of the 007 series and other like spy-thrillers and as a result, he primarily wrote such mystery and spy novels.
