Changes between Job and J.B.
A detailed Summary of Changes between Job and J.B.
There are many different sides to 'changing' or 'changes'. Changes concern physical, mental, or even emotional points. In the story of Job, compared to MacLeish's J.B., change is defiantly is an issue where this term is found in each of the different views. All of these different changes are what make the difference between the two stories. The book of Job was found to be from 800 to 300 B.C. The story from the Bible was obviously written according to the time period. In MacLeish's J.B., though the date wasn't stated, could be assumed to be a more current representation of Job. With the very different dates, is also a different interpretation of the story.
"The oxen were plowing and the donkeys gazing and the Sabeans attacked and took them and killed the boys...Lightening fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and boys...Chaldeans attacked the camels and took them and killed the boys...Your sons and daughters were feasting and a great wind came out of the desert and knocked down the walls of the house and it fell on them and they're dead and only I escaped to tell you." this depiction of Jobs' initial loss contrasts with J.B., in which his family was the first to be taken from him. It is apparent

A big change in MacLeish's J.B. was the actual character of Job and J.B. Each acted different from the other. "I trust it. I trust my luck - my life - our life - God's goodness to me," was J.B.'s comments on God's treatment. J.B. almost took everything he had for granted, it seemed like he wasn't fully appreciative to what he had in his possession. It was as if he thought he had everything he did, because of his luck and gave no thanks "That's the way a child give thanks, she tries the world on. So do you." This was obviously opposed to how Job, "a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and avoids evil," viewed his own lifestyle. Job's character seemed more innocent than that of J.B. J.B. didn't seem to really take God's blessings seriously or even take God within himself. Job seemed more sincere to what his gifts were and how he should act towards God. "Job would have them come to be purified." He was even concerned about his children being faithful to God. J.B. could be bes!
viewer because it gives personal opinion. Not only is it from Mr. Zuss, or Nickles, but from Godmaks or Satanmask, so its affects on the audience is stronger having them believe they are a higher power. Compared to the Book of Job, it was the readers original thoughts and opinions, which led them through the book and there wasn't anyone to throw commentary out..
MacLeish also added two characters to his version of Job. These two characters were Nickles and Mr. Zuss, also known as Satanmas
