The Ku Klux Klan is the oldest, largest and most professional white civil rights organization. The KKK is still active today. "For over 125 years, the Ku Klux Klan has remained true to its white supremacist roots in the states of the civil war confederacy" (Deborah Able, 43). In the mid 1980's there were an estimated 10,000 members of this organization. The original Klan was formed in the south right after the Civil War. Its purpose: to control the newly enfranchised black voters and the northern ward politicians (Carpetbaggers, they were called) who had taken control of the conquered states of the confederacy. The KKK displays its disgust with other races by burning crosses for them to see. The Klan believes in drug testing for welfare recipients, closing the American border, outlawing homosexuality and interracial marriages, ending affirmative action and race based college scholarships.
