Sports Pyschology
My name is Matthew I am currently playing baseball for a Junior College and previously played at South San Francisco High School. While playing the game of baseball during high school, I realized how hard it was for me to succeed in the game. It was there that I learned that no matter how much you practice or train, the most important aspect to build on is to how to play the game mentally. I came to realize this during my sophomore year in high school. During this time, my peers and coaches shared with me that although I had the physical skills to play the game, I lacked the mental attitude of the game that would make me a more productive and complete player. To assist me with the mental aspect of the game, my coach recommended the book, "The Mental Game of Baseball" written by well-known sports psychologist H.A. Dorfman. After reading and applying the principle of that book, I became a whole new baseball player. During my sophomore year in high school, I was the team's starting 1st baseman. Evidence of this was when after playing ten games, I had alrea
With this book, I became a good hitter. This book taught me how to be sharp mentally as a hitter. I developed a Pre-game plan, and that was to see the ball as well as possible. I used self-talk and relaxation techniques I had learned from the book to prepare me before each at-bat. During my at-bats, I became mentally ready on every pitch and every situation. I made every at bat a tough one. I was mentally prepared to hit because I was a positive thinker instead of a negative one. The results showed as my batting average improved from .110-260 in a span of five games dy made 8 errors and owned a very low batting average of .100. I know now that because I was too eager to impress everyone, I was unable to perform to my capability. As a first baseman, I felt tremendous pressure to make all the plays because I account for 70 percent of the outs. If I made one error it could set back our team. As a hitter, I put to much emphasis of trying to get a hit so I would still be kept in a lineup. I knew I needed help on the mental aspect of the game. As a high school student, it would be pretty difficult to afford a sports psychologists. I purchased the book "The Mental Game of baseball." It was more affordable to read the
