Follow the Fleet

Review Of The Movie Follow The Fleet

Starring Fred Astaire And Ginger Rogers.

Follow the Fleet is a romantic comedy with dance numbers drawn into the story of two love stories that contrast between those who want to get married and those who do not want to get married. The movie starts off with Bake Baker and Bilge Smith (two sailors) on shore leave trying to find love for the evening at the Paradise Club. After arriving at the club Bake is surprised to find his old dancing partner Sherry working at the club. Sherry broke Bake's heart when she chose her career over being his wife. Bake softens Sherry up by dancing together for old times sake, but ends up getting Sherry fired by mouthing off. Leaving Sherry no choice but to place her future in his hands.

During all of this Sherry's, sister Connie shows up to the club to visit, but the sailors show no interest in Connie because she is plain looking. Sherry gets a few girls that work at the club to dress her up. Shortly after being dressed up Bilge starts paying attention to her until he finds out that she is looking for a husband. Bilge leaves Connie with the thought that this relationship has a f

In Bake's case he was shown as a man wanting a long-term relationship with Sherry, were Sherry would become a military wife and stay at home raising the children. The scenario of Bake and Sherry is very typical of the traditional family values placed on men and women of that time. However Sherry fought against the traditional mold of women becoming homemakers, by telling Bake that she was choosing a career over becoming his wife and staying at home. However Sherry does fit into the mold of a woman that depends on the man after she loses her job and has to place her future into the hands of Bake.

In the Scenario of Bilge and Connie, Bilge is the typical sailor on shore leave looking for a good time. However he does not even give Connie a second thought because she is a plain looking women. But after Sherry dolls Connie up to look more glamorous, Bilge takes notice right away and the two hit it off right away. Bilge thinks he has found the perfect women until Connie mentions that she plans to marry one day. In this Connie perfectly fit into the traditional role of a homemaker that is more than willing to place her husband above her own financial needs.

My personal reaction to the film was that the dance numbers were exquisite to watch but the film itself lacked passion and the plot was to simplistic. It is clear however that both couples belong together but that is only due to the fact of casting rather than any real chemistry between the four characters in the film. An example of this is the only reason Astaire and Rogers seem to be drawn together is because of their talent to dance rather than a mutual feeling of not wanting to live without o
