chapter 7 ;Until this scene, which occurs more than a third of the way into the story, Turtle (the 3-year-old Taylor has taken responsibility for) has been a silent character, best known for her powerful, snapping-turtle-style grip. Now, for the first time, Turtle begins to talk.

At this point in the novel, all the loose pieces have come together. Taylor has safely delivered Estevan and Esperanza to Oklahoma, where they are less likely to be arrested as illegal aliens and where they can blend into the community. And Taylor has succeeded in adopting Turtle.
