Holden Caulfield's Nervous Breakdown
Are you having a nervous breakdown? There are many signs of a nervous breakdown. Some of the signs that alert that a nervous breakdown is coming are fatigue, irritation, loss of appetite thoughts of giving up, and loss of interest in what used to provide pleasure (Biology Archive). There are also signs that a person is experiencing a nervous breakdown. These symptoms include but are not limited to a growing tendency to think negatively, loss of a sense of purpose and energy, an increasing detachment to relationships, uncontrollable irrational behavior, anxiety, depression, obsessive activity, persistent performance of an irrational activity, crying, shouting, violence and doing "stupid" things (Biology Archive). These signs are not noticed by the individual experiencing them, but are evident to those around them such as classmates, friends, and family. In the novel The Catcher In The Rye, J.D. Salinger showed us how Holden Caulfield, the main character in the novel, went! through a nervous breakdown. The signs of Holden's nervous breakdown went unnoticed until it is too late. One of these was his increased detachment to relationships. He distanced himself from some of his friends, but tried to make conversation with new people. He was always lonely, but still, he detached himself from his friends. He bought a prostitute but all he did with her was talk. He didn't have sex with her. This was one of the reasons that led a person to believe that Holden was lonely. Another clue was that, as stated before, Holden wanted to run away with Sally. He was trying to detach himself from his other relationships to move away into the woods with Sally and detach themselves from the outside world. When Sally rejected him, he went back to one of the methods he used to try and get people to talk to him. He asked cab drivers to join him for a drink. Along with this tactic he begged people to stay with him when they actually were having a drink with him. He was saying on page 149 when he was! l, Holden showed many signs of a nervous breakdown. These signs included obsessive activity, increased detachment to relationships, uncontrollable irrational behavior, shouting, violence, and crying, just to name a few. I thought that some of these signs were hard to interpret because many people experience some of these signs, but they aren't on the verge of a nervous breakdown. J.D.
