In Shakespeare's play, Macbeth, the theme of appearance versus reality was very relevant and important throughout the entire play. The theme relates to many of the characters in the play. They seem like truthful, trustworthy people, but really most of them are conniving and deceitful people. The appearance of a person is sort of like a first impression or a judgment of a person. On the other hand the reality of a person is the actual person or meaning of the person. Shakespeare uses this theme of appearance versus reality in many of his plays to prove the audience's first impression of characters wrong, and to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. Macbeth, the main character of the play, is a very good example of the theme throughout the entire play. The two young men fled the country realizing what everyone's thoughts were. Their appearance to both the audience and the other characters in the play was that they murdered their father and fled the country, in order to avoid the consequences. The reality of the situation is that Macbeth killed King Duncan because he knew that Malcolm and Donalbain would flee the country and he would become king.
