Number the Stars takes place during World War II. The main character, Annemarie Johansen is best friends with a girl who belongs to a Jewish family in Gernmany. Annemarie also has a younger sister, Kirsti, and her older sister, Lise, died two weeks before her wedding date to a boy named Peter Nielsen. One day, Annemarie, Kirsti, and Annemarie's best friend Ellen were walking home from school. On their way, two soldiers stopped them to ask who they were and what they were up to. Annemarie knows something is wrong, but tries to stay calm and answers the questions quickly. When she arrives home she tells her mother about the soldiers stopping them and questioning them on the walk home. Her mother doesn't tell her anything about what is going on, just to walk home a different way which makes Annemarie begin to worry. Neither the Johansen's or the Rosen's found out for sure what was going on until a button broke off Kirsti's coat and the girls went to the store to get a new one for her. The store was closed so the girls came home asking why it was closed in the middle of the day. Peter told the family that all the store in the city run by Jews were to be closed because the German's have put out orders to do
I thought this book was good, but very easy to read. I think I would have probably liked it more if I had read it a couple years ago, but it was still good. I would definitely recommend it to someone even if they weren't doing a report on it. It was a book that you would sit down and read and not want to stop. It had a lot of suspense between chapters and always made me wonder what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed the book and would give it a five star rating. so. The townspeople begin to get mad because the things they need are becoming harder to find with all the Jewish shops closing down. The novel and the book had several differences and only a few similarities. Some of the differences are in the soldiers and the weapons. The book only talks about the soldiers having guns, but the article talked about atomic bombs and other weapons. The book also had the soldiers always stopping and asking people questions, but in the article questioning officers were never mentioned. There were other differences too. One was how the article made the war seem to be the worst war ever, but in the book it never seemed to be that bad or to affect the lives of the people living during that time much either. Another difference was how some Jews escaped to Sweden for safety hidden in boats, but the article never said anything about the Jews escaping that way. Also, the article never talked about the Nazis soldiers getting hold of lists from the synagogues of all the Jews that attended them.
