Extinction in pigeons

One White Carneau pigeon were kept at its 80% ad lib weight. Both grain and water were made available to the pigeon in its homecage. The pigeon was about six years of age. The pigeon had no experience with the experimental produre.

The hardware used to conduct this experiment were as followed: A two-door gray soundproof enclosure, measured 49.5 cm long, 54.5 cm wide, and 34.5 cm high. An observational window was slightly centered on the left door of the chamber covered by a sliding door. This window was 27 cm long and 18 cm high. There was a 1.5 cm thick white porous installation lining the entire inside of the enclosure. Two fans were used to ventilate the chamber. Both fans were 12 cm high and 11 cm across. side of the chamber, there was an opening for the hopper. This was centered 1.5 cm up from the bottom of the chamber. The opening was 8 cm. long, 5cm high. The hopper was distanced 4.5 cm away from the chamber.

Four reinforcement schedules were introduced. The first schedule was a fixed interval schedule (FI 20 s) and the second schedule was a variable ratio schedule (VR 40), the third schedule was a differential reinforcement of low rates schedule (DRL 8 s), and the four the schedule? . During the FI 20 s schedule, the house light was on, the discriminative stimulus (SD) was present on the monitor and for the first responses to the SD, after 20 seconds, one reinforcer was given. During the VR 40 schedule, the house light remained on, the SD was present on the monitor and one reinforcer was given for an average
