One of the better known songwriters of the early twentieth century is Woody Gunthrie. Within this books covers is a bit of history that tells of a hobo and his stories traveling the country, trying to make enough money to scrape by another day. He always loved to play his guitar and tell people "How it was." A person like Woody did not care if he had money or not. He was happy just sliding by in one of the hardest times this country has seen and felt.

Gunthrie begins his book as he is day dreaming on a train. He catches the reader's attention with descriptive writing about the way the top of the railway cars felt to him and how the wind felt running through his hair. It made the reader think about what it would be like to be free and not have to worry about anything. The book was kind of an escape; it was very pleasurable to read, and then afterwards, it was still pleasing to be able to think about what was just read.

Explaining about the hardships of people through song, are what most of his songs were about. Some of them were about Uncle Sam and others were about the hardships of the hoboes. He always tried to cheer people up, and forget about the hard times, even though he was having the worst of times. Acting like a joker on a king's entertainment court, Woody tried to renew the laughter and trust people used to have in one another.

In conclusion, this book states that even though people may be going through tough times and things don't always seem to be going their way, that there is a happy medium that they can find in what ever it is that they do. Gunthrie did not care if he had money; he was happy signing and making it the way he wanted to. Not taking orders from anybody but himself.

Woody's life never did exactly leave the ground. He was always poor, looking for something to eat. In the whole book, there was not a time that he had more than five dollars. The forty-five cents he earned a night, was only because he had a guitar and a talent of making up songs on the spu
