acid rain-help prevent it

Help Fight the Fight Against Acid Rain

A couple of years back my family and I decided to make a trip to Pakistan after a gap of 2 years. Now we were all looking forward to this trip. Firstly were going after so long and were looking forward to spending some time at our grand home in Pakistan which had a lush green lawn and acute little pond in the center of it. I could already imagine sitting over there and having a great holiday. Another thing that made the trip more exciting was that we would be reaching Pakistan during the monsoon season. That means fun filled days of dancing and playing in the rain...something that we never get to do back here in the UAE. Here...it hardly rains. Anyways, we reached Pakistan and what luck!! It was raining. Immediately my brothers and sisters ran into the rain. But all of a sudden my uncle - who had come to receive us at the airport - began to shout at us to come out form the rain. His exact words were - "the rain is poisonous". We listened to him but what he said kept poking me in t!

he back of my mind. "What did he mean?" I just couldn't understand. Anyways I didn't let that spoil my mood and on the way to our home I was already jumping with thoughts of what I was going to my home. But the s

All right now do u remember what had happened to my home? Well that was all thanks to acid rain. Acid particles are also deposited on to buildings and statues, causing corrosion. Limestone and marble turn to a crumbling substance upon contact with the acid, which explains the corrosion of buildings and statues. In addition, bridges are corroding at a faster rate, and the railway industry as well as the airplane industry has to expend more money in repairing the corrosive damage done by acid rain. Not only is this an economically taxing problem caused by acid rain, but also a safety hazard to the general public.

Now do you realize why I am urging each and every one of you to help fight this problem?

More than 80% of all Canadians live in areas with high acid rain-related pollution levels.

Each day this serious problem increases, many people believe that this issue is too small to deal with right now. In fact if this issue is faced so early it can be solved before it is too late. Have you not heard of the saying - prevention is better than the cure? Then let's prevent acid rain from becoming an uncontrollable problem.

This is something I saw with my own eyes. During one particularly acid monsoon rainstorm in Pakistan, I saw a lime green colored car, which had had the yellow from the green paint bleached away leaving blue raindrop-shaped spots all over the cars. How did that happen? Acid rain ofcourse.

3. Finally, acid deposition affects a number of inanimate feature of human construction. Buildings and head stones that are constructed from limestone are easily attacked by acids, as are structures that are constructed of iron or steel. What if one of these heavy structures falls on you when you lest expect it.

Acid rain gets released into the environment through the acidification of soils. The toxic substances from there can end up anywhere. It can end up in the drinking water, crops, and fish. Us humans then consume this stuff. If these things are eaten in great quantities, which they usually are, they can have harmful effects on human health. Acid rain, as studied by the US Congress Office of Technology Assessment, is believed to be related to the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease and also correlated to respiratory illnesses.

I once read in the Time magazine that in Canada, Ontario alone has lost the fish in an estimated 4000 lakes and it was calculated that Ontario stands to lose the fish in 48 500 more lakes within the next twenty years if acid rain continues at the present rate. Ontario is not alone, on Nova Scotia's Eastern most shores; almost every river flowing to the Atlantic Ocean is poisoned with acid. This has caused a loss of $200 million in the Canadian fishing industry.

All right now that is what happens to trees and soil.

It has been estimated that acid rain causes $1 billion worth of damage in Canada every year. Thousands of lakes have been damaged; a large part of the salmon habitat in the Maritimes has been lost; a significant proportion of eastern Canada's forests has been affected; and considerable damage to buildings and monuments has been documented.

You know if we don't solve this problem now then things can get even worse.
