What I mean when I say censorship is ridiculous is exactly that. In Censorship Opposing Viewpoints, it states that the American Heritage Dictionary was banned from Anchorage, Alaska because of words dubbed obscene, like bed, tail, ball, and nut. At first we laugh at it, but we stop when we hear it has also been banned in Cedar City, Indiana, and Eldon, Missouri. I thought dictionaries help you learn? An article in Scholastic Update entitled "The Case of the disappearing Books" it says last year there were 338 cases of parents trying to remove books, among these was the classic Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. A teacher was fired because she assigned a book with a lesbian as a main character. A parent, Ruth Somoro, said this was being intolerant of religious beliefs, and schools aren't supposed to promote religious beliefs. Hmm, I don't get it. I think these people must be protecting themselves from the outside world, not watching news or reading newspapers to see what really ha!ppens and the horrors people have to go through every day, we learn about them sometime. I feel bad for their kids. The last point is ever so true. Censors are the most arrogant, hypocritical, intolerant people ever. Censorship in today's society, all t
Starting in 1951, radio stations banned Dottie O'Brien's "Four or Five Times" and Dean Martin's "Wham Bam, Thank You Ma'am fearing that it promoted sex. In 1954, Stephen Foster's songs were edited for the radio, cutting out the words "mass" and "darky". Songs were banned just because it promoted violence or drinking. The ABC Radio Network banned Billie Holiday's rendition of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" in 1956, due to the lyrics about prostitution. The CBS television network cancels Alan Freed's Rock n Roll Dance Party after a camera shows Frankie Lymon dancing with a white girl. In 1959, Link Wray's instrumental classic "Rumble" is dropped from radio stations because even though there are no lyrics, the title was suggested to promote teenage violence. On the hit show American Bandstand, Dick Clark introduces Link Wray and his band but doesn't mention name of the song because they wanted a secure appearance. o express their own opinions, there is a limit. Material that is obscene, false or disrupts school activities is not protected. committing suicide at the end of song. The character Stan also abuses his pregnant wife resulting in her murder along with his suicide. Suicide is another major issue. Being a big rock star or a beautiful celebrity is a big responsibility. They have to be careful of their actions and what they do because their fans look up to them. If they jump off a bridge, at least one will jump. A couple years ago, there was an animated show called Beavis and Butthead. After a 14 year old burned down his own home just like Beavis and Butthead, it was banned on MTV. Do we have to wait till something happens to set a limit? Times have certainly change from then to today. Our values and morals haven't completely changed but the year 2000 has grown from the 1950's. This year President Bill Clinton called for a voluntary, uniform rating system for the entertainment industry during his annual State of Union speech in January. A 14-year-old Daniel Shellhammer was ordered to remove his shirt that contained slogans from his rap group "Insane ClownPosse". The police officers informed him that the Insane Clown Posse clothing was banned from the State of Ohio. Police in New Iberia, Louisiana closed down a roller rink in February and confiscated about 60 CDs. The police accused the manager of playing music over the PA homework and couldn't believe his eyes and started laughing. He asked my mom if that was real. Now, hardly things get censored. It seems as though anything can get passed by without any argument. Children watch a lot of TV and what they see on TV influences their choices, feelings, and how they think and live. If a 12 year old watches people having sex on TV, that wouldn't be a good influence. That is why we censor those kinds of things. The media does know that children may watch their shows or listen to their radio. Profanity, explicit sex scenes, and really violent scenes are censored and not allowed to be shown on TV nor aired on the radio. We shouldn't be afraid of what our children do watch on TV. Censoring helps society provide good influence to our kids. This is an age in which many Americans are conflicted about censorship. "Censorship is a redherring in this case". She meant that the real issue is values, the quality of life. While music groups and artist such as the 2 Live Crew (which sings about forcing a woman to have sexual intercourse with the guy)
