Cuban Missile Crisis

History is an important part of our lives and the world we live in. By studying history people can be educated about the remarkable events that have taken place on earth. There have been a number of incidents that have occurred in the past that has changed our way of living forever. One of the most unforgettable events that we have learned about through world history studies is The Cuban Missile Crisis, an occurrence that put the world and its inhabitants on edge for days.

This essay will go over the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis and its consequences thereafter. Key events will be explained in detail along with the Important arrangements that settled the conflicts.

The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. "The fate of millions literally hinged upon the ability of two men, United States President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev, to reach a compromise." (library.thinkquest.org.CubanCrisis)

The crisis was the culmination of growing tension between the United States and Cuba. Cuban Premier Fidel Castro was well aware of several U.S. attempts to remove him since he came to power in 1959. One such unsuccessful attempt was the Bay of Pigs invasion by CIA-backed


The Cuban exiles were hoping to get some support from the local Cuban population to try to get across to the capital, Havana.

The tensions mounted between Cuba and the United States when the Soviet Union secretly began supplying Cuba with nuclear missiles just 90 miles off the coast of the United States.

Gromyko went to see the president following Khrushchev's orders, he was to tell the president that the only assistance being furnished to Cuba was for agricultural and land development so the people could feed themselves, along with a small amount of defensive arms. Kennedy informed Gromyko that the U.S. would not tolerate offensive nuclear weapons in Cuba, Gromyko denied that such thing was taken place.
