A detailed Summary of crustaceans

Crustacean, common name for any of a group of mainly aquatic arthropod invertebrates, including the crab, lobster, and shrimp. Crustaceans are also successful in fresh water, and a few, such as sow bugs, are common in moist land environments. Although most crustaceans are small, they vary widely in form and include such large members as lobsters up to 60 cm (24 in) long and a spider crab with a leg span of 3.6 m (12 ft). The subphylum contains about 26,000 known species.

Like all arthropods, crustaceans have an external skeleton (exoskeleton) and a body made up of a series of segments. Each of these segments generally bears a pair of branched limbs. In the course of evolution, the segments and other parts of the body have become specialized. The limbs, used in respiration, swimming, crawling, and feeding, may be highly modified as jaws, reproductive organs, and other structures, or they may be simplified or lost

The head is usually fused with several segments behind it, forming a region called the cephalothorax, which is followed by the abdomen. Commonly an outgrowth of the head, called the carapace, covers much or even all of the body. On the head are two pairs of sensory organs (antennae) and a pair of jaws (m

How do they hear? Because they are invertebrates they do not have the bones and cartilege that form the structure of our ears. they also live under water so they have a different need for hearing. When we hear a noise we are listening to the change in air pressure, aka sound waves. Crustaceans listen to the change in water pressure around them. But instead of ear they have tiny microscopic hairs all over their hard shell and on there antennae. They also have tiny hairs for smelling and another which responds to a stimulus by sending a message to the nurvious system which allows them to feel water movenment , vibaration, and touch. as for hearing, they basically react to vibration more than sound, cuz that's how they hear.

Many crabs can be found on land and also down in deep parts of the oceans. They have four pair of walking legs, and one pair of claws. True Crabs only have 3 pair of walking legs. Hermit crabs are maily eaers of dead plant or animal matter. flase crabs, flat and similar to chelipeds. The abdomen is a short flap tucked under the thoraz and there are only three pairs of walking legs.

Heaviest Crustacean was the Lobster which weight 42 pounds 7 ounces. It was caught in 1934 and the nickname was "Mike" Type of lobster- Atlantic Lobster.
