The Sami population is populated in a broad belt going over north of Norway, Sweden and Finland, there are also some Sami populated in Russia. The largest part of them live in Norway, there are several different estimates but according to the latest numbers in a Norwegian newspaper it is around 25000 Sami living in Norway (the same week the British newspaper Guardian weekly estimated it to be 50000, the double) anyhow there is a lot of confusion concerning the Sami people also in Norway, for instance its often assumed that all Sami are making a living of reindeer up north in Norway. This should give them a larger degree of self-governing and also more concrete property rights. But when it comes to important natural resources, profit interested politicians are hard to move.
