A detailed Summary of Affirmative Action


"It was a wise man who said that there is no greater inequality than the equal treatment of the unequal" (Felix Frankfurter, judicial opinion 1949). This means that nothing is more unjust, then justifying the unjustifiable. How can something be equal when the government gives rewards, and opportunities to people just because the color of their skin, their age, or their sex. According to The American Heritage Dictionary "affirmative action", is "Action taken to provide equal opportunity, as in admissions or employment, for minority groups and women (American Heritage Dictionary, 84). But isn't it obvious that you cannot counteract discrimination with more discrimination. It is just like violence. You can't end violence with more violence; it's a never-ending cycle. It is programs like affirmative action, which keep segregation alive in this country.

Many people like to say that because of past discrimination that minorities need a boost to "catch up"; they didn't have all those years of learning and education that the white male had. I have one question to ask anyone who thinks this way...what about the Jewish people. There surely hasn't been anyone more discriminated against than the Jews, and look at them. They are some of the wealthiest people, with the highest paying jobs, and the best education. So should our government give them a "boost", to "catch up" because of past discriminations? No.
