In Scene 2, Act III, both Brutus and Mark Antony give very important and interesting speeches, revealing much of their personalities and characters. Caesar has just been killed, stabbed to death by a group of his closest "friends", including Brutus, whom he loved greatly (195-200). The conspirators have bathed their hands and arms in Caesar's blood and have raised tension and chaos among the Roman citizens. Antony has gone courageously to see Caesar's body and speak to the conspirators to understand why they have done such a horrible deed. Mark Antony has asked the conspirators for permission to carry Caesar's body outside and make a funeral speech in his honor. Brutus agrees but Cassius fears and predicts Antony will betray them. Brutus ignores Cassius' warning and walks to the pulpit of the Capitol to speak before a group of citizens, while Cassius does the same with another group.

Continuing his speech, Antony, again, brings out Caesar's will and, not able to resist the mob's persistence, begins to read it, revealing that Caesar has left seventy-five silver coins for each man and all his private walks and gardens to be used by the public. This has caused the crowd to start a fire to burn Caesar's body in a holy place and then use pieces of the burning wood to destroy the conspirators' houses. Alone, Antony gloats over what he has accomplished and decides to just let things take their course and happen as they should. As we have seen, both Brutus and Mark Antony have proven their points with clear reasons and effective results. Nevertheless, Mark Antony has cleverly managed to take advantage of his manipulative and eloquent ways, and has achieved what he desired: to protect and defend Caesar, get the Roman citizens on his side, and persuade them to take revenge on the conspirators.
