maria's efforts
A detailed Summary of maria's efforts
Identify and discuss the stages Maria seems to go through in the course of the story that lead her from her initial inability to understand her situation in the U.S., to her final awareness of where most of her difficulties would lie an an immigrant.
We know that immigration indicates the movement of people into another nation with the intention of residing there permanently. Along with this movement into a new country, immigrants suffer many changes in their new way of life. They have to adjust to a new language, a new lifestyle and new customs. In some cases, this transition is not problematic, but in other cases immigrants endure complications and suffering. This is the case of Maria Perez, a Guatemalan immigrant who underwent a series of painful stages in her struggle to be part of the American society.
At first, Maria could not understand her position in the American society. Maria would have loved to be part of a T.V. show in which American families participate in order to win important prizes. She immagined herself kissin

g and hugging her children on T.V., the same as all the American families did whenever they anwered correctly. Maria dreamt about the possibility of being part of that typical family game. Maria's children would be so quick to press the buzzers, that the other team would not have time to answer first. She knew she could win a new kitchen set just by spinnig a wheel and picking some words. However, she would be brought back to reality whenever her son remarked that poor people were not allowed on those T.V. shows. Maria did not perceive that only 'the right kind of people who said the right things' were invited to T.V. programmes.
ntion. After watching herself on T.V., Maria recognized that the Americans were incapable of understanding her, since the cultural barriers between them would always continue existing.
