Computers in Society
COMPUTERS,SOCIETY,And What is Virtual Reality? Why are computers valuable to us? For the most part, the value of a computer is utility and easy access to information. Computers are arguably the most powerful tools we as a society have ever created, since the invention of the wheel. Computers help us attain valuable goals everyday. The language of computers allows us, as humans, to communicate with one another. Specifically, we want them to extract useful information for learning and entertainment purposes. They can be described as a language machine much like us. Between computers and humans there are striking similarities and differences. Some of the similarities have, for instance, provoked psychologists to describe the differences using metaphors and models of computers. In the past twenty years, machines have become more human-like and with the ------ process of modern society, we have become less emotional, more robotic, and more logical. This process has worked because it has made many of us wealthy. We, as a society, have come to value production, effectiveness and efficiency which turns this science into general knowledge because science has brought unlimited lists
of tools which has made us much more productive. This proves the computer to be the heart of our mechanical minds. "What is Virtual Reality?" 1998 Chicago Sun Times. Ken Hoffmann Human beings recently tended to define, classify, name and generalize everything in society. In our ever increasing scientific perspective, we have become alienated from our true emotions and In conclusion, obviously computers have helped major industries thrive, made life easier to purchase materials, link us with information never before at one's finger tips, but in the end, will we lose sight of our human world? Will personal contact and interaction be a thing of the past? We don't have to look too far, it's happening faster than we can think. Virtual Reality (VR) sounds rather maniac term used in information & telecommunication area, but it is becoming an important key word now. The progress of simulation technology makes it possible for us to experience "more than one reality" by virtual reality, with the aging of interactive multimedia technologies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In another example, there is a future image of VR to realize like a Sci Fi version of "Fantastic Voyage" of Isaac Asimov. Fantastic Voyage is such a fiction story that reduced doctors to microscopic size are injected into the artery of a dying patient for medical treatment, but
