Like the Puritans, Benjamin Franklin believed in God and the virtues of hard work, thrift and prosperity. Yet it is uncertain whether Franklin and the Puritans actually shared the same image of God and man.
The Puritans believed that because of Adam and Eve's sin of disobedience, most of humanity would be damned for all eternity. Yet, though Adam's sin was damning, the Puritans believed that because of God's mercy He would send His son to earth to allow some to be saved. They also believed that God determined a person's fate. Franklin and the Puritans shared the same views on many things but, the question is, whether they both shared the same image of God and man. Franklin believed that man had a free will while the Puritans felt man had a predestined fate. Big Ben also believed in principles that were common in all religions while the Puritans thought that their religion was the only right one. While Franklin thought that man had inherent goodness, the Puritans thought that man was a sinful creature. Lastly Franklin believed in shared worship while the Puritans thought worship should be a personal experience. It is very obvious that they varied in opinions on religion. Franklin and the Puritans differed greatly in their beliefs about God and man.
