The range of thinking is huge, and it is affected by many different things. These include internal and external (intrinsic and extrinsic) influences. When the internal processes are allowed to act strongly, a person's thinking is often creative and expressive. Dreams, imagination, and delusions are all intrinsic. Nevertheless, stimulus from the outside environment also play a large role. When thinking is dominated by these stimuli thinking becomes more logical and disciplined. These two aspects of thinking can also be called Autistic (internal), and Realistic (external).

Realistic thinking is thinking that is oriented towards the external environment. It includes problem solving, creative thinking, and working in groups. To maximize the effectiveness of realistic thinking motivation is needed. A compelling need to succeed or a fear of failure as well as simple rewards can work to motivate a person's realistic thinking. An individual's strategy and style can work to help or hurt and individuals realistic thinking.

Problem solving is the use of realistic thinking to come to a solution. When the goal is very difficult to achieve, complex forms of realistic thinking occur. When put into such a situation a person will


The last classification of thinking is pathological thinking. This broad section has classifications for various types of personality problems. The first of these are the behavior disorders. Behavior disorders are committed by people who may think normally, but, for some reason, deviate from society's norms and are antisocialable. The next problem, neurosis happens when a subject justifies a blatantly wrong act by another incorrect method of thinking. Neurosis shows up in many forms including rationalization, denial, hatred, or reaction formation. The last problem is called psychosis. Stemming from disturbed thinking, it can be cause by anything. With totally distorted thoughts, the subject may hear non-existent voices, have amnesia, ramble meaninglessly, or claim to have visions from spirits.

The first subtype, free association, happens when the bounds of logical thought are removed. During free association, the person's thoughts wander uncontrollably and become symbols without an apparent meaning. This jumbo of garble merely disguises the thoughts of the individual. These trains of thought may cue a psychologist as to the current mental state of the patient.

Autistic thinking is the exact opposite of realistic thinking. Environmental influences decrease; internal influences increase and dominate thought. In this thought process, the mind is vulnerable to emotional and motivational thought. The individual thus responds purel
