Money can change anybody and Pip was no exception. When Pip is poor he truly wants to be a gentlemen, he has great expectations for himself. Pip feels embarrassed that his family has no money. Pips pride corrupts him and blinds him from how he is treating Joe. He finds the price paid for letting money rule your life can be a harmful thing. He loses friends, family, and parts of himself all to be a "true gentleman".
When Pip first meets Estella he is quite embarrassed of his family and himself due to their economic standing in society. Pip does not want to be an apprentice to Joe and by rejecting the position it puts Joe down. He wanted to impress Estella but Joe and his sister have no money therefore he is left
