Things of Now Came from Then
Wow. That’s almost all I have to say about Canterbury Tales so far. I am totally amazed by the variety of professions the pilgrims had. Even more so by the level of intelligence that was included at the time period. A doctor, a lawyer, a knight, many clergymen, and scholars; I was waiting for Chaucer to begin rhyming about a surgeon or the CEO of a major company. The pilgrims, for the most part, were of affluent and intelligent backgrounds; that in particular amazed me. Furthermore, I was able to see very specific similarities between Chaucer’s descriptions of then and my personal observations of today. Through out the poem there is a definite connection to the people of that era and I am a little more aware of why we are the way we are in the present. As far as I can understand the author is portraying his views of the people he is traveling with and is defining them for the reader. He includes with all a title of profession, some sort of description as to their personality or their prof
