Things of Now Came from Then

A detailed Summary of Things of Now Came from Then

Wow. That's almost all I have to say about Canterbury Tales so far. I am totally amazed by the variety of professions the pilgrims had. Even more so by the level of intelligence that was included at the time period. A doctor, a lawyer, a knight, many clergymen, and scholars; I was waiting for Chaucer to begin rhyming about a surgeon or the CEO of a major company. The pilgrims, for the most part, were of affluent and intelligent backgrounds; that in particular amazed me. Furthermore, I was able to see very specific similarities between Chaucer's descriptions of then and my personal observations of today. Through out the poem there is a definite connection to the people of that era and I am a little more aware of why we are the way we are in the present.

As far as I can understand the author is portraying his views of the people he is traveling with and is defining them for the reader. He includes with all a title of profession, some sort of description as to their personality or their prof

Chaucer also includes in his observations of the lawyer-like-man a description of clothing: "He wore a homely parti-colored coat Girt with a silken belt of pin-strip stuff; Of his appearance I have said enough." (338-340) I found this to be humorous; he had led the reader to believe the lawyer was of an elevated status. Then, right at the end of the ovation, we sense Chaucer is not impressed by the lawyers clothing apparel. I suppose this could be similar to the way we describe pimps, (just try to forget that they are slime for a second). Sure they have lots of money, lots of women, nice cars, and etc. but my god, look at their clothes!

He knew of every judgment, case and crime

There also was of noted excellence...

I could go on making comparisons about any one of the characters Chaucer described. That's how well he described each. However, that would require more time on my part and more time on your part so...I am stopping here.
